ELA 20

Starting Out - Beginning and Becoming

Our childhood is one of many memories.  In this unit, we will be looking at these memories and those of the characters we read/view.  Memories may be positive or negative, but they shape who we are today.  We will be studying The Glass Castle during this unit.

"Children Are Monsters" writing assignment DUE Monday, March 2.

On Wednesday, we started our novel study The Glass Castle.  We read part I together.

Read pgs. 9-25 for Thursday.  We will complete a Think, Group, Share activity and review the Important Quotations and Journals assignment for the novel.

Feb. 19-20
We will be reading two short stories "Penny in the Dust" and "Charles" and completing the comprehension activities.  We will also be reading an essay "Children Are Monsters" and completing a writing activity.

Feb. 9-12

We will be looking at the comparison between childhood experiences for girls and boys growing up.  We will view the movies Stand By Me and Now and Then and write a comparison essay.

Feb. 2-6

We will start with the writing process and composing a friendly letter introducing yourself to me!

We will also look at the various childhood memories we have from our own childhoods.  As well, we will compile a list of differences that will exist for teenagers in 15 years!
For example: When I was a teenager, we had corded phones, we didn't have cell phones, and we taped music on actual cassette tapes! Off the radio!
